Croatian Health Ministry said on Tuesday the risk of possible Ebola infection in the country remained extremely low although 18 returnees from West Africa are being monitored.
No case of infection had been recorded so far.
None of the 18 monitored persons in the past three weeks have Ebola symptoms, the ministry said.
According to the minister, they have been placed under surveillance by the Institute for Public Health (HZJZ) following their arrival in Zagreb as an obligatory cautionary measure for everyone coming from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
The epidemiologist from HZJZ said the returnees would be monitored for 21 days, which is how long it takes the Ebola virus to incubate.
If they don’t get sick in 21 days the risk for them is over, he said, adding the chances of them being infected are believed to be slim, as most of them are sailors worked in isolated surroundings.
The ministry said Croatia had stepped up monitoring since April, in accordance with World Health Organisation and European Commission recommendations, after Ebola outbreaks in the West Africa.
