A baby boy born during a road accident that killed his parents in the southeastern city of Xiamen is still in critical condition and under medical observation, a doctor said Thursday.
On Tuesday morning, a couple in Haicang district, were on a motorcycle to hospital to have their baby delivered. They were killed after a collision with a heavy-duty truck near a crossroads.
The impact of the collision caused the baby to be born.
"It is a miracle that the infant survived the gruesome road accident," Fang Mei, a pediatrician at Haicang Hospital.
The baby, 51 cm long and weighing 4.2 kg, suffered bruising to the head, back, legs and arms when he was admitted to hospital.
Further examinations have shown he suffered a brachial plexus injury and a minor brain hemorrhage. The child is under medical observation, Fang told Xinhua.
The Xiamen municipal health bureau has sent medical professionals to the district hospital to help work out a best possible treatment plan.
"As medical staff, we'll try our best to bring him out of danger," Fang said.
Locals have volunteered to take care of the baby at hospital and a group of mothers have provided him human milk.
In addition, the local Red Cross has set up a fund to help cover medical and child-raising costs.
