A Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777-200 passenger plane with 239 people onboard went missing en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing early Saturday.
The following is a brief introduction of the model of aircraft.
The Boeing 777 is a twin-engine, wide-body jet airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Co.
The long-range plane, which can carry up to 282 passengers, is capable of flying 9,696 to 17,372 km.
Malaysia Airlines has 15 of the 777-200 jets in its fleet of about 100 planes.
Boeing Co. has delivered a total of 1,178 Boeing 777 planes as of February 2014.
The crash of Asiana Flight 214 in San Francicso in July 2013 that resulted in three deaths was the first time a 777 aircraft had crashed since it first entered service in 1995.
