A survey revealed Thursday that over 80 percent of Chinese are concerned about the environment. Smog, drinking water and food and radioactive contamination were among the top concerns.
The survey, the first of its kind in China, was organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and carried out by the China Environmental Culture Promotion Association.
With 13 indicators and 29 questions, the survey began in July 2013. More than 20,000 questionnaires from 50 cities and regions were collected.
Zhou Hongchun from the Development Research Center of the State Council, who was the leading expert in the research, said that the survey reveals that the public are not doing enough to fulfill environmental protection targets. “This situation closely reflects the fact that people are reluctant to pay for environment protection, even though they are aware of the issue,” he said.
More than 70 percent of those surveyed believe it is the government and environmental departments' responsibility to protect the environment.
