China's education authorities on Friday reminded the country's students to behave themselves while traveling during the upcoming holiday.

Students should not litter, spit, or speak loudly in public places, according to a statement published by the Ministry of Education on its website.

Students should comply with traffic rules and respect local laws and cultural customs when traveling at home or abroad during the 7-day National Day holiday, which begins on Oct. 1, the ministry said in the statement.

"Keep an appropriate distance from others, respect the privacy of others and rationally deal with possible disputes," it said.

The ministry also reminded them not to use foul language or carve characters on items in scenic spots.

Chinese travelers have become the largest tourist market in the world.Spending by Chinese on travel abroad totaled US$102 billion in 2012.

Continual media exposure of "uncivilized" acts by Chinese vacationers has prompted authorities' efforts to project a good image of Chinese tourists.
