World Bank to Grant Togo US$30 Mln in Telecom Support

Xinhua News Agency, June 17, 2013 Adjust font size:

The World Bank will give Togo US$30 million to support its telecommunication sector, a source from the international financial institution's office in Lome said on Wednesday.

The investment will help to reinforce telecommunications connectivity in the West African country. This will involve laying of the fiber optic cable and carrying out reforms of the regulatory mechanisms to promote healthy competition in the sector.

The World Bank's intervention will help to improve access, quality and reliability of the voice and data communications, while reducing costs.

This intervention is part of the second phase of the West Africa Regional Communications Infrastructure Program (WARCIP), whose total spending is 300 million dollars.

The program is intended to end the connectivity deficits among the 16 countries in West Africa and the rest of the world.
