A young girl suffering serious symptoms of the A/H1N1 flu is "recovering well," Canadian health officials said on Tuesday.

The Alberta girl is Canada's first severe case of the outbreak. She was hospitalized last week and was confirmed as being infected with the new virus on Monday.

Andre Corriveau, the province's chief medical health officer, said on Tuesday the girl is still in an Edmonton hospital but is breathing on her own. He did not disclose the details of her symptoms.

Among the province's two new cases confirmed on Tuesday, one is a boy who has not been to Mexico but may got the infection from his parents, who recently traveled to the country. Both cases are recovering.

With five new cases reported in the province of Ontario, Canada's total now stands at 147.
