Canada reported its first severe case of A/H1N1 flu infection on Monday that requires hospitalization.

A young girl from the Edmonton area of Alberta has been hospitalized with a severe case of H1N1 flu, Andre Corriveau, the province's chief medical officer of health said.

This has been the first such case in Canada. All cases confirmed previously have been mild. There have been no deaths.

Corriveau said the investigation is not complete, but so far there is no evidence the girl or anyone in her immediate family have recently visited Mexico.

The girl is one of six new H1N1 flu cases in Alberta, bringing the province's total to 24.

Earlier in the day, Prince Edward Island confirmed its first two cases and New Brunswick reported one new case.

The total of Canada's confirmed cases now stands at 110.
