2nd LD Writethru: Afghan policeman, 10 assailants killed in attack on gov't compound in Kabul

KABUL, May 30 (Xinhua) -- At least one policeman and 10 assailants were killed in an attack on the compound of the Afghan Interior Ministry on Wednesday, a ministry's spokesman said.

"The initial intel found that one police personnel and 10 assailants were killed after gunmen launched a coordinated attack on the interior ministry's main office at around noon local time," spokesman Najib Danish told local Tolo News TV.

The first attacker detonated his explosive vest at the front gate and the second group of gunmen tried to storm the facility, he said.

The attackers were disguised in military uniform.

"We heard a huge blast at the first gate of the ministry which is located near Charahi Shaheed Square," eyewitness Farhad Mohammadi told Xinhua.

"But the militants failed to reach the main building which is at the center of big open yard with high-profile security system," he said.

"Situation is now under control and further details will be shared with media later on the day," spokesman Danish added.

He said that five police were also wounded in the clash.

"There is fear of civilian casualties. A probe is still on. But our police said that at least two civilians were either killed or injured in today's attack," he said.

A four-line road which connects the Kabul airport with the city's Intercontinental Hotel passing the area was blocked for traffic after the attack.

No group has claimed responsibility yet for the attack, but the Taliban insurgent group routinely claims responsibility for such attacks. Enditem
