LUSAKA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Wednesday.
--Zamia's livestock sector has registered significant growth with pigs recording the highest population increase of over 1.4 million in the last one year, according to figures released by a government ministry responsible for livestock and fisheries.
According to the latest report released by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the population of pigs increased to 4,481,152 in 2017 from 3,048,403 in 2016, translating into a 47 percent growth while the poultry sub-sector was the second best performing sector, posting 25 percent growth followed by goats at 18 percent while the population of sheep and cattle grew by 14 percent and eight percent respectively. --Zambia's insurance regulator has closed down two insurance firms for allegedly being insolvent.
The Pensions and Insurance Authority said the two named insurance firms have been closed with immediate effect and placed under compulsory liquidation after consideration of statement of affairs of the assets and liabilities of both insurance firms which revealed that the entities were insolvent. --Zambia's central bank has released a Credit Market and Monitoring report aimed at promoting more and better credit in the country.
Bank of Zambia (BoZ) Governor Denny Kalyalya said the report highlights data collected through the Credit Market and Monitoring Program conducted in 2016 which gives an overview of Zambia's retail credit market with a focus on credit and debt stress. (Daily Nation)
--An association representing lawyers says Zambian President Edgar Lungu should have declared the gift of land given to him by King Mswati of eSwatini, formerly Swaziland, as a matter of transparency.
The Law Association of Zambia said while the mere receipt of a gift by Lungu does not, in itself, constitute a breach of the country's anti-corruption law, it will be benefiting for the Zambian leader to relinquish the gift to the nation or the Zambia embassy in that country. (The Mast) Enditem
