3 arrested over S. Africa stadium violence

JOHANNESBURG, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The South African police said Tuesday they have arrested three people in connection with violence that erupted during the Nedbank Semi-final Cup on April 21 in Durban.

Kaizer Chiefs fans invaded the pitch, damaging facilities and attacking security guards when their team was beaten 2-0 by Free State Stars. The incident saw 18 people injured and caused damages estimated at about 216,000 U.S. dollars.

Police say the arrested include a truck driver, a taxi rank manager and a taxi owner.

"It is only a matter of time before others are arrested. I would advise those who were part of the mob that went on a rampage on that unfortunate day to hand themselves over to police as one of these three who were arrested did," said Bheki Langa, acting provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal.

The suspects will appear in court tomorrow facing charges of public violence. Enditem
