MOGADISHU, May 1 (Xinhua) -- A female Somali aid worker was shot dead by gunmen in the largest market in Mogadishu on Tuesday, police said.

"We can confirm that men armed with pistols killed her in Bakara market. We are investigating the incident," a police officer who did not want to be named told Xinhua.

The woman, identified as Maryam Abdullahi, was reported to be an employee of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Baidoa town, southern Somalia.

Witnesses said gunmen shot her in the head several times and escaped.

"After they killed her, they managed to escape and then security forces arrived at scene," an eyewitness, Fartun Isak, told Xinhua.
