France says DPRK's move to discontinue nuclear tests "encouraging first step"

Xinhua,April 23, 2018 Adjust font size:

PARIS, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s decision to discontinue its nuclear tests was an "encouraging first step," France said on Monday, calling for more action to reach a complete and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear and ballistic program.

France welcomed the DPRK's announcement to discontinue nuclear tests, the end of long-range ballistic missile testing and the closure of the nuclear test site, the Foreign Ministry said.

Stressing the necessity to restore lasting stability in the Korean Peninsula, the ministry said Paris hoped the inter-Korean summit on April 27 will contribute to establish peace in the region.

DPRK leader Kim Jong Un announced early Saturday that his country will discontinue nuclear tests and test-firing intercontinental ballistic rockets from April 21, according to the KCNA, the DPRK's state broadcaster.

Kim's announcement came ahead of his first summit meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the border village of Panmunjom. Enditem
