VIENTIANE, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Ministry of Public Security said 29 people were killed in road accidents nationwide during a three-day celebration of the Lao New Year on April 14-16, Lao News Agency (KPL) reported on Thursday.

The state-run news agency quoted the Department of Traffic Police under the ministry as saying that this year's New Year celebration witnessed 207 road accidents nationwide and leaving 385 people injured.

"Most of the road accidents during Pi Mai (New Year in Lao language) were caused by drunk driving and violation of traffic rules," said Khamsone Sidavong, deputy director of the Department of Traffic Police.

Northern Laos' town Luang Prabang recorded the highest number of death toll with eight people killed in road accidents during Pi Mai followed by capital Vientiane with six and central province Khammouane with five.

This year witnessed an increase in the number of people killed in car crashes as it rose by seven or over 30 percent year-on-year, according to Khamsone. Enditem
