Portuguese, Spanish police find 745 kg of cocaine hidden inside pineapples

Xinhua,January 18, 2018 Adjust font size:

LISBON, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Police in Portugal and Spain have seized 745 kg of cocaine hidden inside pineapples, the Portuguese Judicial Police announced here on Wednesday.

The seizure came as the result of a joint investigation, known as "Operation Japy", conducted between Portugal's National Anti Drug-Trafficking Unit and Spain's National Police Corps. The operation began in April 2017.

The pineapples were transported in containers from an unnamed Latin American country to the Iberian Peninsula.

The police have arrested nine men, representing a range of nationalities, and dismantled a processing laboratory where the cocaine was to be doctored and cut.

Besides the cocaine itself, the police seized 400,000 euros (490,967 U.S. dollars) in cash and ten cars. Enditem
