Kenya names strong team, eyes to recapture men's marathon gold at Commonwealth Games

Xinhua,January 16, 2018 Adjust font size:

NAIROBI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Kenya has named a strong team as they seek revenge and recapture the men's marathon title at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April 4-15 in Australia.

Ironically, it was Australian Michael Shelley, who had won silver in 2010 in Delhi, who denied Kenya the chance to ascend to the throne when he won gold in Cardiff, Wales.

Now Kenya is out to recapture the title and fend off any pretenders to the throne as it named a strong six-member team for the Club Games.

Leading Kenya's quest will be Kenneth Mburu, Nicholas Kamacha, and Julius Nderitu in the men's race while Shelmith Muriuki, Hellen Nzembi and Sheilah Jerotich face the hard task to successfully defend Kenya's gold and silver medals won by Flomena Cheyech and Caroline Kemboi respectively in the 2014 games in Glasgow, Scotland in 2014.

"I believe this team will be able to battle the other teams and excel," Paul Mutwii, the Athletics Kenya Vice President who is in charge of competitions, said on Tuesday.

"They have been notified and all have accepted to take the challenge and represent the country," he added. Enditem
