Xinhua,January 16, 2018 Adjust font size:

LUSAKA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Road traffic accidents killed 1,989 people in Zambia in 2017, the police said on Tuesday.

When compared to the previous year, the country recorded a reduction of 217 in fatalities, according to police spokesperson Esther Mwaata-Katongo.

The police spokesperson said out of the persons killed in 2017, 203 were juveniles, of which 123 were boys and 80 girls.

The country, she said, recorded a total of 30,163 road traffic accidents during the year which was a decrease from 32,350 accidents recorded in the previous year.

Most of the accidents recorded were due to excessive speed, misjudging clearance distance, failing to keep to the near side and overtaking improperly, she added. Enditem
