Man City suffers first league defeat

LONDON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- English Premier League leaders Manchester City suffered their first league defeat as they were shocked at Liverpool 4-3 on Sunday.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave the Reds the lead after only six minutes with a wonderful run-and-finish but Leroy Sane levelled the score before the interval when he cut in from the left and fired into the back of the net at the near post.

Liverpool then powered into a 4-1 lead in nine minutes in the second halft.

Roberto Firmino shrugged John Stones off to reach Oxalde-Chamberlain's pass and delicately lift a finish over Ederson. Mane then cracked the post before driving into the top corner just moments later from the edge of the area after Mohamed Salah had won the ball back.

Salah then scooped Ederson's poor attempted clearance over the goalkeeper and into the net from 40 yards.

Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan grabbed late consolations for City in the last seven minutes to make it 4-3.

City still lead the table by 15 points, which could be cut to 12 if Manchester United beat Stoke City on Monday night, while Liverpool move up to third place.

A delighted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said after the match, "This was a historic game you will talk about in 20 years because it looks like City will not lose another one this year.

"People watched this game all over the world and this is why - take your heart, throw it on the pitch and play like this, both teams.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said, "Congratulations to Liverpool for the victory. The game was in our hands at 1-1 but our finishing was not good and then it went suddenly to 4-1.

"After the second goal they scored two in a few minutes and it is hard to recover from that." Enditem
