Earthquake jolts northeast Afghanistan, no casualties reported

KABUL, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A slight quake jolted Afghanistan's northeastern Badakhshan, Takhar and the northern Kunduz and Baghlan provinces on Sunday, but no casualty has been reported.

The tremor, according to locals and officials, occurred at around 01:40 p.m. local time in the said areas.

"The tremor struck Badakhshan province but fortunately it was not strong and we have not received any report about loss of life and property damages," Sayed Abdullah Hamayon Dehqanzada, the head of Natural Disaster Management Authority in Badakhshan province, told Xinhua.

Officials and locals also felt the quake in Takhar, Kunduz and Baghlan provinces but have yet to release any report about loss of life or property damages.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 jolted Afghanistan's north and northeastern region on Sunday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey. Enditem
