180 kilograms of marijuana seized in major Austrian drug bust

Xinhua,January 11, 2018 Adjust font size:

VIENNA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Police in the Austrian state of Styria have busted an international marijuana-smuggling ring, arresting 14 people and seizing 180 kilograms of the drug, local media reported on Wednesday.

The 14 people were from six different countries, and aged between 20 and 50 years old. They were arrested as part of the operation that began in the spring of last year.

Following an earlier operation, investigators came on the trail of a gang with Serbian and Kosovar origins that smuggled the marijuana from Albania to Styria.

In May 140 kilograms of the drug were then found in an apartment in the town of Deutschlandsberg. A further 40 kilograms were seized in the further course of the operation.

The marijuana has an estimated street value of almost 1.5 million euros (1.8 million U.S. dollars).

Authorities said it was one of the largest successful drug busts carried out in the central-Austrian state. Enditem
