WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist, apologized on Sunday for comments he had made and was quoted in a new controversial book calling U.S. President Donald Trump's eldest son's 2016 meeting with Russians "treasonous and "unpatriotic."

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency," according to the statement obtained by the news site Axios.

Bannon said his support for President Trump and his agenda was "unwavering."

"Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around," Bannon said in the statement. Enditem
