BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.92 percent, at 3,275.78 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1 percent lower at 10,911.21 points. The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.77 percent to close at 1,745.24 points.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks ended practically flat Wednesday as a rise in crude oil prices lifting energy-related issues were offset by investors selling after a weak lead from Wall Street overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 18.52 points, or 0.08 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 22,911.21.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 2.78 points, or 0.15 percent, to finish the day at 1,829.79.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 0.4 percent or 13.51 points closing at 3,391.67.

A total of 1.25 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 616.6 million Singapore dollars (about 459.74 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 244 to 134.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia shares closed higher by 56.15 points, or 0.90 percent, to a level of 6,277.16 on Wednesday.

Some 232,558 transactions were booked, involving 27.1 billion copies of shares with a value of 9.3 trillion rupiah (about 686.1 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved up 0.41 points, or 0.02 percent to close at 1,752.89 points.

Some 9.98 billion shares worth 61.51 billion baht (about 1.88 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed lower Wednesday as benchmark indices continued to consolidate after hitting life-time highs.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 33,911.81, down 98.80 points, or 0.29 percent, compared to its previous close at 34,010.61.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,771.76, up 11.77 points or 0.67 percent, and the Emas was at 12,744.10 up 87.02 points or 0.69 percent.

Turnover increase to 2.31 billion shares valued at 1.99 billion ringgit Malaysia (487.75 million U.S. dollars), compared with 2.07 billion shares valued at 1.60 billion ringgit Malaysia (392.16 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 9.33 points, or 0.38 percent, to settle at 2,436.67. Trading volume stood at 191 million shares worth 4.8 trillion won (4.5 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 115.58 points on Wednesday, up 1.52 points or 1.33 percent against the previous trading session.

Over 49.680 million shares worth some 826.915 billion Vietnamese dong (some 36.7 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, an increase of 1 percent in volume and 10 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 968.46 points on Wednesday, up 2.53 points, or 0.26 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 235.825 million shares worth 5.906 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (263.47 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 958.02 points, up 2.29 points or 0.24 percent.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 58.60 points to 8,490.91. The all-share index went up by 20.10 points, or 0.41 percent, to 4,941.51.

Trading volume reached 1.23 billion shares worth 3.60 billion pesos (71.60 million U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market ended flat in the first day of trading after the long Christmas holiday weekend, with volumes expected to be light during the yearend.
