UN Security Council renews mandate of counter-terrorism body

Xinhua,December 22, 2017 Adjust font size:

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Thursday renewed the mandate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) for the period ending Dec. 31, 2021.

The CTED is a UN Secretariat body that assists the Security Council subsidiary agency of the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC).

In a resolution, the Security Council decided that CTED will continue to operate as a special political mission under the policy guidance of the CTC for the new period.

It also decided to conduct an interim review of CTED by the end of 2019.

The resolution underscored that neutral, expert assessment of the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1373, which established the CTC, and Resolution 1624, which called upon member states to criminalize the incitement to commit terrorist acts, and other relevant resolutions, is the core function of CTED.

CTED was established in March 2004. Its mandate was due to expire at the end of this year. Its mandate was last renewed in December 2013. Enditem
