Schippers, Dumoulin claim Dutch sports awards

THE HAGUE, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- World 200m champion Athlete Dafne Schippers and cyclist Tom Dumoulin were named Dutch Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year 2017 respectively at a gala in Amsterdam on Tuesday night.

In the voting among fellow sports women and men and a jury, the 25-year-old Schippers defeated sailer Marit Bouwmeester and cyclist Anna van der Breggen. Two years ago Schippers also received the award.

The 27-year-old cyclist Dumoulin beat speed skater Sven Kramer and Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen to be voted Sportsman of the Year. He became the first Dutchman to win the Giro d'Italia this year, clinching the 100th edition of the cycling race.

The Dutch soccer women were named Sports Team of the Year. As hosts of the tournament they beat Denmark 4-2 to clinch their maiden European title last summer.

Jac Orie was voted Coach of the Year. The 49-year-old speed skating coach led Sven Kramer to the all round European and world title and the 5,000 and 10,000 meters world titles.

Jetze Plat became Paralympian Sporter of the Year for winning four world titles as parabiker and paratriathlete and track cyclist Harrie Lavreysen was voted Talent of the Year. Enditem
