Shanghai detains foreigner for delaying wages

Xinhua,December 19, 2017 Adjust font size:

SHANGHAI Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A court in Shanghai Tuesday convicted a foreigner of delaying wages to employees and sentenced him to five months in detention with a fine of 40,000 yuan (about 6,050 U.S. dollars).

It was the first time a foreigner has been convicted of the crime in Shanghai.

The foreigner, owner of clothing firm Mingxin Fashion Clothes (Shanghai), was found to have held back the wages of its 158 employees totalling 600,000 yuan, according to Shanghai Qingpu District Court.

The foreigner's identity and nationality were withheld by the authorities. He was arrested in northeast China's Liaoning Province in August after having left the country for seven months.

The municipal government said it places importance on resolving issues of delayed wages and has cleared up defaults of 537 million yuan in the first three quarters this year.

The government said it will send inspectors to construction sites, factories, and restaurants to ensure workers receive their wages on time. Enditem
