Snowstorm causes traffic disruptions, power outages in Ukraine

Xinhua,December 19, 2017 Adjust font size:

KIEV, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A severe snowstorm hit central, eastern and northern Ukraine, causing traffic disruptions and power outages in six regions, authorities said on Tuesday.

The State Service for Emergencies said that the snowfall and heavy winds damaged power grids in 147 cities and villages, leaving thousands of people without electricity amid freezing temperatures.

The snow reaching 30 centimeters high in some areas and large-scale slipperiness have also caused major traffic jams on local roads.

More than 590 people were rescued after getting stranded in their cars on the country's motorways.

The blizzard has also caused delays of 30 passenger trains and cancellation of several flights in Kiev airport "Zhulyany" in the Ukrainian capital.

The flights at Boryspil International Airport, the largest airport in the country, were not affected by the snowstorm.

According to the meteorologists, the snowstorm may also affect western Ukraine on Tuesday evening. Enditem
