Tens of thousands of Jordanians protest over Trump's Jerusalem move

Xinhua,December 15, 2017 Adjust font size:

AMMAN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of Jordanians took to the streets on Friday in various governorates to protest over U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The largest demonstration was held in downtown Amman with more than 20,000 protesters from various political parties and groups.

People burned the U.S. and Israeli flags, calling for the abolishment of the 1994 Wadi Araba peace deal that Jordan signed with Israel.

"Jerusalem is ours and it is an Arabic city regardless of what Trump says," said the demonstrators carrying pictures of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem.

Ibrahim Halabi, a 58-year old protester said, "we are here to peacefully send a message that we all reject this decision which will worsen the situation. Jerusalem is a redline for Arabs and Muslims and Trump needs to understand this."

"We all have to also support and show solidarity with the Palestinians over Jerusalem and Palestine as they are confronted with all Israeli violations and aggressions after this decision," Halabi told Xinhua.

The demonstrators also called for boycotting U.S. products and urged Arabs and Muslims to take further steps to exert pressures on the United States to withdraw the decision.

People also held a demonstration in front of the U.S. embassy in Amman to reject the decision. Enditem
