Nearly 150 Palestinians injured in clashes in West Bank, Gaza: medical sources

Xinhua,December 15, 2017 Adjust font size:

RAMALLAH/GAZA, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 150 Palestinians were injured Friday in clashes with the Israeli forces during protests over U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, according to medical sources.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said that 96 Palestinians were injured in the Gaza Strip, including 38 by live ammunition, while over 50 people were injured in West Bank and East Jerusalem.

One man was in critical condition after being shot by Israeli soldiers, who claimed he attempted to stab a paramilitary border police officer near Ramallah, according to the Red Crescent.

Xinhua cameraman Nael Bweitel was lightly injured at the northern entrance of Al-Bireh city near the Bet El settlement.

Scores of Palestinians performed Friday noon prayers at the Israeli military checkpoint of Qalandia, north of the West Bank between Ramallah and Jerusalem.

Following the prayers, the Israeli soldiers at the checkpoint attacked Palestinian protesters with tear gas bombs and opened fire to disperse them.

Tensions have been escalating in Gaza and the West Bank between Israel and the Palestinians since Trump declared last week to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Islamic Hamas movement called for a nationwide protest Friday to boycott Trump's declaration. Enditem
