SHANGHAI, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) on Friday set up the School of Russian and Eurasian Studies to meet the growing demand in graduates majoring in languages of the region.

The university offered the first Uzbek language class within the department of Russian in October 2015, and it set up China's first center of Kazakhstan studies in November 2015 in response to the Belt and Road Initiative.

In September 2016, SISU started recruiting undergraduate students majoring in Hungarian. The university will begin offering courses in the Uzbek and Czech languages in September 2018.

SISU is a Chinese university specializing in linguistics and literary studies. It grew out of the Shanghai Russian School established in 1949.

As one of the top foreign studies universities in China, SISU is known for being one of the earliest institutions for higher education in foreign languages in China.

The university aims to cultivate outstanding multilingual international talent, said Li Yansong, president of SISU. Enditem
