CAPE TOWN, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The following are news items in South African major news outlets on Thursday.

-- The African National Congress (ANC) said on Wednesday that a judicial commission of inquiry was the only recourse in verifying the "very serious allegations of state capture which threaten the integrity of our democratically-elected government".

The ruling party's statement followed a finding by the North Gauteng High Court that former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's recommended remedial actions were wise, necessary, rational and appropriate. (News24)

-- The City of Johannesburg said on Wednesday that the Department of Home Affairs, in an official response, has agreed to establish a joint committee in a bid to deal with the challenge of rising illegal immigrants in the city.

This comes after the city this year wrote to the department demanding it develop a plan to address the rising illegal immigration challenges faced by the city. (Independent Online)

-- President Jacob Zuma's legal team on Wednesday filed a notice of appeal after a High Court decision that Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa be the one to appoint a new National Director of Public Prosecutions.
