Zambia's TAZARA workers end strike

LUSAKA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Workers at the Tanzania-Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) have resumed work after the Zambian government released money for their salary arrears, a union official said on Tuesday.
TAZARA workers went on strike last week to press for their two months' salary arrears, a move that paralyzed operations on the Zambian side while operations remain normal on the Tanzanian side.
Joachim Mulenga, Crews and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CRAWUZ) chairman for Kapiri Mposhi district in central Zambia, confirmed the workers' resumption of work, according to state-run news agency the Zambia National Information Service (ZANIS).
The workers' move to resume work follows the government's decision to disburse funds meant to settle outstanding salary arrears, he added.
According to him, the workers have since started getting their salaries.
Last Friday, Minister of Labor and Social Security Joyce Simukoko urged the workers to go back to work as their grievances had been attended to.
The TAZARA railway is jointly owned by the governments of Tanzania and Zambia. Enditem
