Israeli tanks shell Hamas post in response to rocket attack

Xinhua,December 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

GAZA, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Israeli army tanks on Monday shelled a Hamas military post in Gaza Strip in response to a rocket attack, but caused no injuries, Palestinian security sources said.

Three shells were fired at the military post in east of the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis, which was manned by Hamas' armed wing al-Qassam Brigades. The post was damaged, but no injuries were reported.

The Israeli artillery attack was launched in retaliation for the firing of several makeshift rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, according to the Israeli media.

An Israeli army spokesman was quoted as saying that the tanks targeted a Hamas post in southeast of Gaza Strip and completely destroyed it, adding that Hamas was responsible for every rocket fired from Gaza into Israel.

Tensions have been growing in the Gaza Strip since U.S. President Donald Trump declared last week that Jerusalem is Israel's capital and ordered to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

In the past days, Palestinians have been holding protests in the Gaza Strip and West Bank against the U.S. move and clashed with Israeli security forces, while Hamas has fired several rockets into Israel.

Two Hamas members were killed over the weekend in Israeli airstrikes in response to the firing of rockets into Israel. Enditem
