MANILA -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will ask the Congress for a one-year extension of martial law in the southern Philippine Mindanao island, his ally in the House of Representatives said on Sunday.

Philippine Lawmaker Rodolfo Farinas, also the House of Representatives majority leader, said that Duterte's office is expected to send a letter to both the House and Senate on Monday to formally inform Congress about the request for a one-year extension of martial rule in Mindanao. TOKYO -- Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said Sunday that his ministry has requested an additional budget of 730 million yen (around 6.4 million U.S. dollars) for fiscal year 2018 to introduce two land-based Aegis missile defense systems.

According to an initial budget request announced in August, the ministry required a total of 5.26 trillion yen (47.8 billion U.S. dollars) for fiscal 2018 starting next April, which, if approved, would mark the sixth annual increase since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe retook office in 2012. JALALABAD, Afghanistan -- Hundreds of Afghans came to streets in Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday, condemning U.S. President Donald Trump over the recognition of Jerusalem as Israeli capital.

The protestors, besides burning the effigy of Trump and chanting anti-U.S. slogans, also called upon their government to review its diplomatic relations with Washington. (Afghanistan-U.S.-Jerusalem)

KABUL -- At least 12 insurgents were killed during the airstrikes conducted by Afghan air forces in Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan on Saturday, the defense ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

"The air forces targeted the convoy of militants in Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province Saturday evening, killing at least 12 insurgents," said the statement, adding a vehicle used by militants was also destroyed. (Afghanistan-AirStrikes-Kill) Enditem
