UN concerned about violence escalation in Syria's East Ghouta

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs continues to be concerned over the recent escalation in hostilities in Syria's rebel-held enclave of East Ghouta, said UN spokesman Stepahne Dujarric on Monday.

Aerial bombardment on East Ghouta on Sunday reportedly resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, including women and children. Two cancer patients have reportedly died due to lack of access to medicines and medical care in the besieged enclave near the capital city of Damascus, said Dujarric.

Nearly 400,000 people live in besieged East Ghouta. On Thursday, the United Nations called for an urgent medical evacuation of 500 patients, including 167 children, from East Ghouta, said Dujarric.

Shelling has also been reported over the last days in several residential neighborhoods in Damascus, resulting in several civilian deaths and injuries. Enditem
