Russia asks for investigation into email theft between Cypriot, Russian attorneys

Xinhua,December 05, 2017 Adjust font size:

NICOSIA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Russia has asked Cyprus to investigate the theft of communications between a Cypriot state attorney and her Russian colleagues, Attorney General Costas Clerides said on Monday.

"Russia has sent a message to my office requesting a criminal investigation into the case," Clerides told the Cyprus News Agency.

The case relates to the hacking of the private email account of Eleni Loizidou, the most senior attorney in the legal service of Cyprus, who was in charge of handling extradition requests.

Loizidou is already under investigation by Cypriot authorities for using her private email account to carry out official business, and for providing advice and information to Russian colleagues outside the limits of her duties.

The Cypriot police have started investigating the case relating to the theft of emails, several of which were initially published by a Russian website and subsequently by a Cypriot newspaper. Enditem
