Egyptian policemen on trial for smuggling foreign currency abroad

CAIRO, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian prosecution referred on Sunday eight people including three airport policemen to the criminal court for smuggling foreign currency worth 113 million U.S. dollars abroad, official MENA news agency reported.

The policemen, who worked at the Cairo International Airport, along with the five others, are facing charges of receiving and offering bribes to smuggle foreign currency overseas through the airport customs security checkpoints.

Investigations showed that the owner of an exchange company and a businessman smuggled the money in different foreign currencies with the help of the three policemen, whose role was to disregard their luggage during the security check.

Over the past few years, Egypt has been launching a large-scale anti-corruption campaign that led to the arrest and imprisonment of several officials and senior employees and the retrieval of large amounts of money. Enditem
