COLOMBO -- At least six people were killed and 23 injured when strong winds and heavy rains lashed Sri Lanka since Wednesday night, prompting authorities to issue a severe weather alert.

The Disaster Management Center said the fatalities had been reported from Galle, Gampaha and Badulla Districts while severe destruction had been caused in several areas across the country. (Sri Lanka-Heavy rains-Toll)

JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Transport Ministry on Thursday closed again the international airport in Lombok of West Nusa Tenggara province due to impact of volcanic ash from Mount Agung volcano on nearby Bali island, a senior government official said.

The closure started at 10:37 a.m. local time and will be ended at 00:00 p.m. local time, a statement from directorate general air transport of the ministry disclosed. (Indonesia-Volcano)

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir -- A fierce gunfight between militants and Indian troops broke out Thursday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Fultipora, Pakharpora of Budgam district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. (Indian-controlled Kashmir-Gunfight) Enditem
