Gunfight breaks out in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- A fierce gunfight between militants and Indian troops broke out Thursday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Fultipora, Pakharpora of Budgam district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A gunfight triggered today morning between militants and government forces in village Pakharpora here," a police official in Budgam said.

"The army, paramilitary and police contingents cordoned off the area on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants. As the contingents moved closer to the suspected area, it was fired upon, triggering a gunfight."

Police officials suspected presence of three to four militants in the area.

"The gunfight is underway in the area," the official said. "We would share the details after the culmination of gunfight."

"So far there were no reports of damage to militants or government forces in the stand-off."

Recently six militants and an Indian air force commando were killed in a similar gunfight in Bandipora district of the region.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region. Enditem
