Houston lacks money to build 3rd reservoir: mayor

Xinhua,November 30, 2017 Adjust font size:

HOUSTON, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mayor of Houston, the most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas, said on Wednesday that the city doesn't have the money needed to build a third reservoir.

The cost of another reservoir is around 500 million U.S. dollars, Mayor Sylvester Turner said at City Hall. He urged people to email and send pictures of the damage Houston is still dealing with to congress members.

In order to help Houston avoid major flooding the next time it faces significant rainfall, Turner believes that Texans need the same kind of federal assistance that the state of Louisiana received after Hurricane Katrina, and New York and New Jersey got following Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Harvey blew ashore on Aug. 25 as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than 50 years, displacing more than 1 million and damaging some 200,000 houses in a path of destruction that stretched for more than 480 km. The Houston area was hit by severe flooding, after receiving heavy rain. Enditem
