"Successful" surgery for Sevilla coach Berizzo

MADRID, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo has undergone "successful" surgery to treat the prostate cancer he was diagnosed with last week, the club has confirmed.

Sevilla posted a communique on their official website late on Tuesday following the operation and adding that the 48-year-old's "period of recuperation will depend on post-operative developments over the coming days."

Berizzo joined Sevilla from Celta Vigo in the summer and his cancer was confirmed last Wednesday following a fightback from 3-0 down at home to Liverpool to finally draw 3-3 in the Champions League.

The Argentinian was also on the bench to oversee another fightback on Sunday as Sevilla came back from 2-0 down to defeat Villarreal 3-2.

Footballers and clubs all over Spain carried messages of support for the coach last weekend, and his assistant, Ernesto Marcucci will take over training and directing the team until he is able to return. Enditem
