How did Jiujianpeng achieve this? Zhang Jianping explained, “Honeysuckle grows well in Pingyi County. The flower is a cash crop as well as a Chinese medicinal herb. Villagers focused their efforts on exploring and developing its full potential, and made honeysuckle an important factor in poverty alleviation. Of course, that could not be done without help. Under the leadership of village secretary Liu Jiakun, Jujianpeng exploited the potential of high quality honeysuckle and promoted it to other provinces in China.”

Honeysuckle is a kind of vine. It is resistant to cold and drought. Jiufeng No.1 and Beihua No.1 are two fine varieties grown in Jiujianpeng Village. More than 100,000 mu (16,480 acres) have been planted with the crop in Shandong Province, Yunlong County in Yunnan Province, Makit County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Tongwei County in Gansu Province, and other locations, and hundreds of thousands of farmers have escaped from poverty a result.

“Simply moving funds from richer locations to impoverished locations is not an effective means to alleviate poverty,” said Zhang Jianping. “Large-scale commercial production needs farmers to engage in large-scale planting. On this basis, Jiujianpeng Group took the approach of large scale planting plus industrialized production. We promote fine honeysuckle varieties to farmers and purchase their harvests for further processing. In this way, both farmers and enterprises can make profits.”

Jiujianpeng Group

“Today, Jiujianpeng Group has become a top quality honeysuckle production enterprise with a complete industry chain,” he added. “The company is also a model poverty alleviation enterprise in China. In the future, Jiujianpeng plans to promote honeysuckle to the global market. The scent of honeysuckle is refreshing. We are exploring its potential as a greening plant. We can introduce its potential systematically to other countries; turning it into a global business is just around the corner. There is a lot of potential in promoting honeysuckle to countries along the Belt and Road.”

When asked about how to attract more businesses to take part in poverty alleviation, Zhang Jianping said, “When commercialized operations reach a certain scale, more companies will be attracted to take part. The method of large-scale planting and industrial development created by Jiujianpeng Group has generated good results, attracting more investors from both home and abroad. In the future, under the framework of China’s Internet Plus drive, Jiujianpeng Group will develop honeysuckle plus, and further promote this poverty reduction model to help to lift more impoverished people out of poverty.”

The 2017 China Poverty Reduction International Forum was guided by the State Council Information Office and co-hosted by the China Internet Information Center (CIIC), International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC), World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the theme of “Developing and Sharing Governance Solutions to Reduce Poverty”.
