Palestinian youth shot dead by Israeli settler in West Bank

Xinhua, May 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

Palestinian Ministry of Health declared on Thursday that a Palestinian youth was shot dead by an Israeli settler near Nablus north of the West Bank.

The young man, 23, died of a bullet in the head shot by a Jewish settler passing through Huwara village south of the city of Nablus.

A photojournalist working for an international agency was also injured in the incident after being shot in the arm by the settler.

Eye witnesses told Xinhua that the Jewish settler got off his vehicle and opened fire at the two Palestinians during an ongoing clash between Palestinian youth and Israeli forces in the area, where the latter tried to disperse a demonstration in support of the Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails who have been on a hunger strike since April 17.

Since the beginning of the collective strike, Palestinians have been organizing demonstrations and solidarity activities hoping to pressure the Israeli government to concede the detainees' demands, which include ending administrative detention and solitary confinement, longer and more frequent family visits and improving detainees' lives inside jails.
