Chinese stocks fell for a second day Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.46 percent to end the day at 3,090.14 points.

The smaller Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.56 percent lower at 9,974.35 points. Total turnover on the two bourses stood at 400 billion yuan (about 58.02 billion U.S. dollars).

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, ended 0.5 percent lower to close at 1,813.51 points.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Thursday on ongoing concerns that the course of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump could disrupt planned stimulus measures in the U.S.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 261.02 points, or 1.32 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 19,553.86, marking its lowest closing level since May 2.

Trading volume on the main section on Thursday came to 2,184.63 million shares, up from Wednesday's volume of 1,964.47 million shares.

The turnover on the penultimate trading day of the week totaled 2,719.8 billion yen (24.43 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 157.11 points, or 0.62 percent, to 25,136.52 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 25,025.05 and 25,263.81. Turnover totaled 91.79 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 11.79 billion U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 2.44 points, or 0.08 percent, to close at 3,221.66.

A total of 1.82 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1.33 billion Singapore dollars (959.11 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Thursday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,767.17 down 8.48 points or 0.48 percent, and the Emas was at 12,660.40 down 68.29 points or 0.54 percent.

Turnover declined to 2.99 billion shares valued at 2.64 billion ringgit Malaysia (609.84 million U.S. dollars), compared with 3.45 billion shares valued at 2.88 billion ringgit Malaysia (665.90 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed with nosedive Thursday.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 30,434.79, 223.98 points or 0.73 percent down compared to its previous close at 30,658.77.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed higher by 29.95 points, or 0.53 percent, to a level of 5,645.45 on Thursday.

Some 339,861 transaction were booked, involving 8.4 billion copies of share with total value of 7.3 trillion rupiah (about 544.3 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Thursday moved down 1.94 points, or 0.16 percent to close at 1,545.88 points.

Some 7.88 billion shares worth 38.06 billion baht (about 1.11 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 91.46 points on Thursday, down 0.44 points or 0.48 percent against the previous trading session.

A total of over 68.701 million shares worth some 736.273 billion Vietnamese dong (some 32.6 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, an increase of 9.8 percent in volume and 11.55 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 726.99 points on Thursday, down 0.21 points, or 0.03 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 219.680 million shares worth 5.082 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (227.2 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 695.3 points, down 1.07 points, or 0.15 percent.

A total of 65.265 million shares worth 1.707 trillion VND (76.34 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Thursday.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished higher on Thursday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index up 4.58 points, or 1.37 percent, to close at 338.94.

A total of 6,680 shares worth 31.69 million riel (7,843 U.S. dollars) were traded.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower on Thursday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 6.26 points, or 0.27 percent, to settle at 2,286.82. Trading volume stood at 374.4 million shares worth 5.83 trillion won (5.2 billion U.S. dollars).

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Thursday down 2.81 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index decreased by 29.12 points to reach 1,008.17 points after closing.

A total of 136,100 shares worth about 566 million Lao kip (about 69,147 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

SYDNEY -- The Australian market finished lower on Thursday, with investors spooked by U.S. political turmoil regarding the dismissal of FBI Director James Comey.
