Slovak army to buy hundreds of armoured vehicles

Xinhua, May 17, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Slovak government approved the purchase of nearly 500 armoured vehicles on Wednesday, an indication that the Slovak army has started reviving.

Slovak Defense Minister Peter Gajdos said the country would purchase 81 8x8 armoured combat vehicles for 417 million euros (463 million U.S. dollars) and 404 4x4 armoured combat and multi-purpose vehicles for 782.7 million euros in the next few years.

Gajdos claimed that the Slovak military didn't have these types of vehicles at the moment, and that it was important equipment for operational groups and also independently operating units in any NATO-member country. Current equipment belonging to the Slovak Armed Forces is allegedly approaching to the end of its lifetime.

Meanwhile, the process of deciding how the vehicles will be procured is currently being analysed. The first ten 8x8 vehicles and seven 4x4 vehicles should be supplied to the military as early as next year. Endit
