Pakistan registers protest with UN mission over Indian firing

Pakistan on Wednesday registered protest with a UN observer group over the recent "ceasefire violations" by Indian troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region, the military said in a statement.

"United Nations Military Observers at the UNMOGIP (UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan) were invited to General Headquarters (GHQ) to register a protest over unprovoked Ceasefire Violations (CFV's) and targeting of civilian population by Indian Army on 10th, 13th and 16th May 2017," the Pakistani military statement said.

"Indian Army used Small Arms, Automatic and Heavy Caliber Weapons, Heavy Mortar (122 mm Mortars) and Field Artillery in Sabzkot, Baroh, Tandar, Khuiratta, Kot Koterra and Karela Sectors to target Pakistani villages resulting in shahadat (martyrdom) of one civilian and injuring 15 others including women and children," it added.

The UN Military Observers were also apprised with latest situation along the LoC, it said.

Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire in 2003 that had silenced their guns. However, firing exchanges do take place from time to time and cross-LoC firings and shelling have increased recently after an attack on an army center by militants in the Indian-controlled Kashmir on Sept. 18 last year, killing 19 soldiers.
