Tokyo stocks close higher on Wall Street's rise, rebound in oil prices

Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday as buying was supported by a solid performance on Wall Street overnight and a rebound in oil prices, but profit taking capped gains.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 49.97 points, or 0.25 percent, from Monday to end the day at 19,919.82.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 4.23 points, or 0.27 percent, to finish at 1,584.23.

Pulp and paper, oil and coal product, and food-related issues comprised those that gained the most, and advancing issues outpaced declining ones by 1,130 to 767 on the First Section.

Trading volume on the main section on Tuesday came to 2,174.25 million shares, rising from Monday's volume of 2,155.77 million shares.

The turnover on the second trading day of the week totaled 2,660.3 billion yen (23.48 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
