Israeli naval soldiers opened fire and killed on Monday a Palestinian fisherman from Gaza, and arrested six other fishermen while they were fishing in the Gaza Strip sea, Gaza officials and medical sources said.

The sources said that Mohamed Baker, a 28-year-old fisherman was critically wounded by Israeli naval forces gunfire and six others were detained while they were on a fishing boat in Gaza waters.

The sources added that Baker was taken to an Israeli hospital while the six other fishermen were taken for questioning at Ashdod Seaport in central Israel, and their fishing boat was confiscated.

The medical sources said that Baker was shot in his chest and was in critical condition, adding that his death was declared on Monday afternoon at an Israeli hospital, and he died of his wounds he sustained from being shot earlier in the day.

Nizar Ayyash, chairman of Gaza Fishermen Association told Xinhua that Baker, the fisherman died of his wounds after he was shot by Israeli soldiers and was in critical condition, adding that six other fishermen were arrested.

There has been no immediate response from the Israeli army to comment on the incident.
