Ruling party of Armenia wins majority in Yerevan City Council elections

Preliminary results of Armenia's Yerevan City Council elections released on Monday show a resounding victory for the ruling Republican Party.

Incumbent Taron Margaryan is all set for another four-year term in office as mayor of Armenia's capital city.

According to the Central Electoral Commission, the Republican Party of Armenia received 71.25 percent of the vote, while the opposition bloc YELQ and the Yerkir Tsirani Party garnered 21 percent and 7.75 percent respectively.

The threshold for making it into the 65-seat Council of the city was set at 6 percent for parties and 8 percent for party blocs.

Yerevan is home to one-third of all voters in Armenia and accounts for almost half of the country's GDP. Endit
