UN chief outraged by attacks on civilians, peacekeepers in CAR

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned attacks against the civilian population and the United Nations in Central African Republic (CAR), urging authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to justice, said a UN statement on Sunday.

The UN chief reiterated that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers "may constitute a war crime," said the statement.

"The Secretary-General is outraged by the attacks perpetrated by suspected anti-Balaka against civilians and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) on May 12-13," the statement said.

These attacks led to significant population displacement, an undetermined number of civilian casualties and the death of one Moroccan peacekeeper, bringing to six the number of peacekeepers killed in the Central African Republic this week, according to the statement.

"The Secretary-General offers his condolences to the family of the bereaved peacekeeper and the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco," it said. Endit
