S. African opposition parties to march in support of secret ballot against Zuma

Xinhua, May 13, 2017 Adjust font size:

South African political parties will march to the Constitutional Court in support of a secret ballot in a parliamentary vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma, the opposition parties said Friday.

At a press briefing here, nine opposition parties made a joint statement about the march. Later this month, Zuma faces a no-confidence vote in parliament.

"We the leaders of political parties...are united behind the call for Members of Parliament to be allowed to decide, by secret ballot, whether President Jacob Zuma must vacate office or not," said the United Democratic Movement (UDM) President Bantu Holomisa while reading the statement.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane called on the African National Congress (ANC) to join their position on the vote of no confidence in Zuma.

The Constitutional Court is expected to announce a judgment on Monday about whether the legislators will have a secret or open vote. The ruling ANC with two thirds majority is against secret vote. Endi
